What is a dental crown?
There are several reasons why we may suggest a crown for one or more of your teeth. The most common reasons are that the tooth has started to or is cracked already, or there is a very large filling that needs to be replaced which would result in a filling so large it would compromise the long-term outlook for that particular tooth. Once a tooth becomes more filling material than actual tooth, that is the time to start having a conversation about a crown. Dental crowns have many applications. The first is to be installed over a damaged tooth to cover the remaining structure. Doing this restores the tooth so that it can be used normally with must less risk of further damage. Crowns can also be attached to dental implants to replace missing teeth; these implants will be surgically inserted into the jawbone and serve as the root for the tooth. This procedure keeps the crown steady and secure. Additionally, dental crowns may also be used to provide extra support for dental bridges. They do not require any special treatment and can be brushed and flossed as normal.
What is a dental bridge?
Dental bridges are commonly used when a patient has lost one or more teeth. They are called bridges because they consist of one or more replacement teeth that bridge the gap that was created when the original teeth became lost. Dental bridges are secured using crowns on each end of the open space to support the replacement teeth. We custom design each component of a dental bridge to ensure that it looks natural and provides the desired performance.
How do temporary dental crowns work?
There are a few steps your dentist will follow while making your dental crown or bridge: First, the tooth or teeth will be prepared for the crown or bridge. This means that some teeth will be removed from all around and from the top of the tooth – this is to make space for the crown or bridge being made. After that, we will scan the tooth or teeth being prepared as well as the rest of your upper and lower teeth with our iTero Digital Scanner to create a virtual, 3-D model of your mouth. This scan will allow our specialized dental laboratory to make your permanent crown or bridge that will fit securely and accurately, essentially sealing the tooth underneath. Before you go home, we must create a temporary crown for you to wear until we get your permanent crown or bridge back from our cutting-edge dental laboratory. This is typically worn for 1-2 weeks while our laboratory custom-makes your new crown or bridge, and it will protect your tooth or teeth from sensitivity and breaking. Because we use the iTero digital scanner we are able to get your custom-made, permanent crown or bridge back from our laboratory quickly with as little interruption to you as possible. This technology also enables our laboratory to make the most accurate crowns and bridges so that your permanent crown or bridge will fit well and provide you with a natural feeling bite.
